Russian Association of Proletarian Musicians

The Russian Association of Proletarian Musicians ( RAPM ) is a music and social organization that existed from 1923 to 1932 , also called the Association of Proletarian Musicians ( APM ) and the All-Russian Association of Proletarian Musicians ( VAPM ).

RAPM was founded in Moscow on the initiative of a group of musicians - members of the RCP (b) and saw its goal in creating a revolutionary mass music repertoire [1] . The Association was primarily engaged in musical and educational activities, among its members were music critics L. N. Lebedinsky , Yu. V. Keldysh , D. V. Zhitomirsky , A. A. Groman-Solovtsov [1] .

Like all "proletarian" organizations of that time associated with art, the RAPM professed the ideology of the Proletcult , like all "proletarian" organizations, it was intolerant of everything that it considered non-proletarian [2] ; half a century later, Yu. V. Keldysh wrote: “The judgments of the RAMP theorists suffered from vulgar sociologism and were often unfair to the most prominent representatives of Soviet music and the leading artists of foreign countries. ... Many valuable phenomena of classical musical art were declared ideologically alien to the proletariat. One of the serious mistakes of the RAPM was the underestimation of the issues of mastery and large musical forms, and the mass song was considered as the “main link” of the work of composers ” [1] .

In 1925, a group of composers left the RAPM who did not share the sectarian narrowness of its ideologists, including D. S. Vasiliev-Buglai , M. I. Krasev , K. A. Korchmarev , G. G. Lobachev , who formed the Association of revolutionary composers and musical figures (ORKIMD) [2] .

The activities of the RAPM in the second half of the 1920s were predominantly theoretical; in her spirit, she was close to the Prokoll organization (the production team of students of the Moscow Conservatory), which was created in the mid-1920s, which included, in particular, composers Alexander Davidenko , Viktor Bely , Boris Shekhter , and later Dmitry Kabalevsky and Aram Khachaturian [2] . “Pokoll”, closely connected with the choral groups of Moscow enterprises, strove to bridge the gap between mass genres and academic music , to create mass music of revolutionary content, using proletarian hymns and Russian folk songs as an intonation foundation. The main core of the “Pokolla”, led by the leader of the organization, A. Davidenko, merged in the RAMP in 1929 [2] .

The activities of the RAPM influenced the formation of national music societies. For example, in 1928, with the direct participation of Viktor Bely, the Association of Proletarian Musicians of Ukraine was established .

At different times, the publishing bodies of the Russian Academy of Public Relations were the magazines Music and October (1926), Proletarian Musician (1929-1932) and For Proletarian Music (1930-1932) [1] .

After the publication on April 23, 1932 of the decree of the Central Committee of the All-Union Communist Party of Bolsheviks “On the Reorganization of Literary and Artistic Organizations”, the Union of Soviet Composers was established — the RAPM, like all other musical organizations, was dissolved [1] .
