Marquis Who's Who ( Rus. Markuis Who is who ) is a subsidiary of News World Communications , an American publisher of several directories containing brief biographies. Books are usually called "Who is who in ...", for example: Who is who in America , Who is who among American women , Who is who in the world , Who is who in science and technology , Who is who in American politics , etc. Marquis Who's Who books are often found in reference sections of local, corporate, university, and government libraries [1] [2] .

Who is Who in America is its main publication, a registered trademark of News World Communications . The New York Times called the 60th anniversary of Who's Who in America a Librarian Vanity Fair [3] .
In the preface “Who is Who in America” it is written that the book “seeks to provide biographical information about the leaders of American society, those men and women who influence the development of the country” [4] .
The contents of the book Marquis Who's Who includes career data and personal data, including date and place of birth, names of parents and family members, education, works and creative work, social activities, awards, political affiliation, religion and address [5] . The contents of the book are also available on the Internet for libraries and other paid subscribers.
The marquise does not require publications or material penalties from persons selected in the book to compile their biography in it [6] .
History
Founded in 1899 by Albert Nelson Marquis, the first edition of the publication contained brief biographies of more than 8,500 “prominent Americans.” Albert Marquis wrote that the purpose of the book is to compile “a chronicle of the lives of people whose achievements and contributions to the development of society make them subjects of wide interest and study” [4] .
Today the company produces more than a dozen different series and offers an online database with information for 1.4 million people; Who is who in America contains over 100,000 words. In 2008, the company launched a second website (Who's Who in America) that publishes biographies of the lives and careers of people who are claimed to be America’s most noteworthy men and women [7] .
Originally independent, it was acquired [ when? ] conglomerate ITT Corporation . McMillan Publishers acquired ITT Corporation in 1985. The publisher Reed Elsevier bought the Marquis and the National Register from Macmillan in 1991. News World Communications , which owns The Hill , [8] bought the Marquis in 2003.
