History
Star Cruises was founded as a subsidiary of the Malaysian Genting Group [2] on November 10, 1993 in Bermuda and is headquartered in Hong Kong [3] .
The first ships of the company were two ferries from the property of the bankrupt Swedish Rederi AB Slite . In subsequent years, Star Cruises acquired several more used vessels. It was only in 1998 that the shipping company received its first new SuperStar Leo , followed by the twin SuperStar Virgo the next year. In 2000, Star Cruises bought the Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL; along with its daughters Orient Lines and Norwegian Capricorn Line ) and thus became the first global cruise company. The company Norwegian Capricorn Lines was immediately integrated into Star Cruises and this brand did not pop up anywhere else. Before buying the NCL from Star Cruises, it was planned to build several new vessels, and some of them were already under construction, so after the merger they were identified in the NCL. In August 2007, Star Cruises announced that a 50% stake in NCL was sold to Apollo Management, an American holding.
In 2001, Star Cruises founded a new daughter, Cruise Ferries , which first with the help of a single vessel, Wasa Queen , organized cruises from Hong Kong to Xiamen .
Since it turned out that the market launch under the Norwegian name “Norwegian Cruise Line” is more profitable than under the own brand Star Cruises , since 2006 a tendency has appeared to transfer all new vessels to the NCL, and as a result, older vessels to transfer to Asian Fleet Star Cruises.
