Title and Initiation
The main throne of the church is dedicated to the feast of the Protection of the Holy Virgin - one of the great holidays of the Orthodox Church. The Feast of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary was established in Russia in the 1160s under Vladimir Prince Bogolyubsky of Vladimir. It is associated with the events of the Byzantine history of the X century. Blessed Andrew with the lad Epiphanius prayed in the Blachernae Church of Constantinople when they saw the Mother of God accompanied by John the Baptist , John the Theologian and many other saints. Entering the temple, the Mother of God prayed for a long time near the pulpit , and then at the altar , after which she went out, removed the maforium and spread it over the worshipers as a sign of protection and patronage [1] .
A toponymic addition to the name of the church in the sources of the 18th - early 20th centuries is found as "... in the City", that is, inside the Ivan the Terrible Kremlin . The toponym “Torg” in the name of the church appeared already in Soviet times by the name of the modern Torgovaya Ploshchad (Kazan Square until 1918). This name, in turn, is associated with the ancient trading rows located here and the market, abolished in the early 1970s.
History
The Church of the Intercession on the Market (Intercession in the City) was built on the site of the more ancient church of Joachim and Anna . The construction of the church of Joachim and Anna dates back to Vologda’s visits by Tsar Ivan the Terrible . His first stay in Vologda was recorded in 1545. In 1549, the first-born, daughter Anna , was born at Grozny, and in honor of this event a temple was laid in the Novodevichy Convent [2] with a dedication to Joachim and Anna. The Vologda wooden church of Joachim and Anna in the 1560s became a house church at the wooden palace of Ivan the Terrible. After the fire of 1605, the church is restored and is called Joachim and Anna at the Sovereign in the entrance hall, and in 1627 - Joachim and Anna in the Old Tsar’s Court. By architecture, the church began - the second half of the XVII century belonged to the type of cage temples .
After the fire of 1679, the church was rebuilt already with the consecration of the main throne in honor of the Protection of the Most Holy Theotokos and the aisle of Joachim and Anna. A warm wooden church (probably rebuilt after another fire in 1698) lasted until the 1780s. Warden Kirill Poyarkov and parishioners received permission from Archbishop Irenaeus to build a stone church. It is known that at the time of construction the wooden church was moved without terminating services in it. After the construction of the stone church, the former was demolished for firewood [3] .
It is known that the Church of the Intercession already existed in Vologda at the end of the 15th century - in chronicles it is mentioned that it burned down in 1486. But reliable information about whether the mentioned church was related to the Church of the Intercession on the Bargain was not found. An indirect confirmation that the Intercession Church has an earlier origin than the Church of Joachim and Anna is the existence of Pokrovskaya Street at the beginning of the 17th century. On this street was the Sovereign's Court and the Church of Joachim and Anna [4] .
A stone church with the main throne in honor of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos and the aisles of Makarios Unzhensky and Joachim and Anna was built in 1778-1780. Since 1832, the temple became a summer (cold) church of the Intercession-Kazan Parish, which was formed after unification with the Kazan Church in the Swamp . In the mid-1920s, the church was closed and handed over to the governor, despite the fact that it fulfilled the very stringent conditions for the existence of churches put forward by the Soviet government. The closure of the temple, in which at that time there were 2 parish communities (Pokrovo-Kazanskaya and Nikolskaya Sennoposcholskaya ) was accompanied by a powerful protest of the parishioners [5] . Divine services were resumed in 1992. In 1995, a Sunday school was opened at the temple [4] .
Architecture
The main volume of the church is a pillarless cube, crowned with a two-tiered head. On the east side, a small five - sided apse adjoins the main volume, and on the western side, the refectory elongated along the longitudinal axis of the temple. A tent bell tower is built over the narthex. In the second half of the 19th century, a pseudo-Russian-style porch was attached on pillar-pillars. In general, late Baroque motifs can be traced in the decor of the temple: pilasters cannulated at the top, window frames with kokoshniks, rustication at the corners of the bell tower [6] [7] .
