Swaraj ( Hindi स्वराज : sva- “self” + raj “law”) is a synonym for self-government , used by Mahatma Gandhi [1] . It is usually related to the concept of independence of India from Great Britain introduced by Gandhi [2] . Swaraj basically implies political decentralization and governance, not through government, but through members of society and public gatherings. [3] The Gandhi concept led to severe upheaval for the political, economic, military and educational British institutions in India. [2]
Swaraj in the understanding of Gandhi was not fully executed. The volunteer organizations founded by him for the implementation of swaraj became prototypes for social movements and non-governmental organizations, which subsequently appeared in various regions of India [4] .
