Story

In 1926 , student of the Odessa Music College Kostya Ivanov carried away a new direction in music - jazz . For this hobby, he, a Komsomol member, is expelled from a technical school.

Kostya wants to create his own jazz band . According to the announcement, two friend-musicians, wandering artists - Styop Grushko and Zhora Ryabov come to him. Styopa plays the banjo and trumpet, and Zhora plays the violin and drums. Konstantin makes them interested in jazz, and the new jazz band begins rehearsals. The very first performance ends with a brawl with the audience, and Stepan makes a decision - they and Zhora leave. Kostya is desperate, but two “gentlemen” appear here, inviting jazz bands to play on the anniversary of the authoritative thief .

As a result of the performance on the anniversary, the musicians fall into the police cell. In the chamber, jazz players get to know Ivan Ivanovich Bavurin, who is necessary for a full-fledged jazz band as a saxophonist , as he previously played the saxophone in the Life Guards Preobrazhensky regiment .

Together with Ivan Ivanovich, the group sets off to conquer Moscow. But Moscow already has a very successful jazz ensemble. Konstantin is trying to attract the famous foreign jazz singer Clementina Fernandez to his team, but the event ends for the group with the loss of both the singer herself and the last money.

Konstantin is in despair. The drummer and saxophonist recalls that Konstantin mentioned a certain captain, a jazz theorist named Kolbasiev . And the idea arises that it would be nice if he expressed a positive opinion about Kostin’s work. But since it is difficult to find him, friends find a former sailor who agreed to play Kolbasyev. At the very last moment, the false Kolbasiev for some reason begins to rest. This causes a cheerful reaction from Bones, and he comes out of the spleen.

Heroes were sheltered by the head of the " Association of Proletarian Musicians ", a big fan of jazz. And when everything began to improve, jazz in Soviet Russia in 1928 was declared "illegal". But the real captain Kolbasiev was invited to the concert in advance ...

Many years later. Aged friends, now famous musicians, perform in front of a wide audience.
