Encarnacion

Encarnacion is located in the extreme south-east of Paraguay, on the Parana River near the border between Paraguay and Argentina. He is the administrative center of the Itapua department .

The city, with a population of about 130 thousand inhabitants, is divided into two parts - the modern one, which has become the financial and commercial center of the border area, and the old city with a square grid of streets, located near Rio Parana. The Argentine city of Posadas Encarnacion is connected by the modern bridge Puente Internacional San Roque Gonzalez de Santa Cruz ( Puente Internacional San Roque González de Santa Cruz ). The population of the city is of mixed origin - except for Paraguayans, descendants of immigrants of German, Polish, Ukrainian, Arabian and other origin live here.

The climate in the area of ​​the city is mild, humid.

Encarnacion is the center of the Roman Catholic bishopric.

Encarnacion was founded on March 25, 1615 by the Jesuit priest Roque Gonzalez de Santa Cruz. In 1843, the name of the city was shortened to modern. The city received significant development after a railway line from central Paraguay was drawn to it in 1854.

28 kilometers from the city, the Jesuit missions of La Santisima-Trinidad de Parana and Jesús de Tavarangué , created in the 17th century, have been preserved on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1993.

Since 1916, the annual All-Paraguayan Carnival has been held in Encarnacion.

Encarnacion is the birthplace of the former long-standing ruler of Paraguay Alfredo Stroessner .
