Biography
Born May 14 (26), 1833 in the family of priest Stefan Yakovlevich and Alexandra Lvovna Znamensky in the city of Kurgan , from where the family moved to the city of Yalutorovsk in 1839. He was a student of the Decembrist Ivan Yakushkin [2] , in childhood showed the artist’s talent. He graduated from the Yalutor school, studied at the Tobolsk Theological Seminary .
In 1851, through the efforts of the Decembrist Mikhail Fonvizin, he was sent to the St. Petersburg Model Theological Seminary, which he graduated in 1853 in the painting class and returned to Tobolsk [2] .
From 1853 to 1860 he taught at the Tobolsk Theological Seminary .
In 1860 he received a diploma of a teacher of drawing at the Imperial Academy of Arts .
He was a close friend of Peter Ershov .
In 1890 he was elected candidate curator of the Tobolsk Provincial Museum [3] .
Died March 3 ( 15 ), 1892 in Tobolsk . He was buried in Tobolsk at the Zavalny cemetery [4] .
Creativity
Collaborated with periodicals - "Eastern Review", "Siberian Leaf", " Tobolsk Provincial Gazette ."
In 1851, M. Znamensky studied painting and icon painting under the supervision of the famous professor of the Imperial Academy of Arts F. G. Solntsev [5] .
Mikhail Znamensky is the author of the first work of art in Russian literature of the 19th century, entirely devoted to the Decembrists . In 1859, he conceived a novel of an autobiographical plan, the basis of which was to serve as memories of the Decembrists [1] . The first part of the work - “Disappeared People” was published in 1872 in St. Petersburg in a collection devoted to the Siberian theme. The second part - “Tobolsk of the forties” was published in 1884 in the newspaper Vostochny Obozreniye. The third part - “Fifties in Tobolsk” remained unfinished and unpublished [1] . An incomplete manuscript of the third part is stored in the Central State Archive of Literature and Art in the Mikhail Znamensky Foundation [6] .
He left memories of Peter Ershov , Matvey Muravyov-Apostol , Ivan Pushchin , Vasily Tizengauzen , Ivan Yakushkin and others.
He wrote poems that were preserved only in a small fragment [7] .
The author of portraits of the Decembrists , art paintings, illustrations for the works of Peter Ershov , Ivan Goncharov , Kondraty Ryleev , sketches of Central Asia and the north of Siberia. He was an employee of the Iskra magazine, in which he posted over 300 cartoons, mainly devoted to the life of the Siberian province [8] . Also engaged in bone carving [9] .
Engaged in research in the field of ethnography, archeology and history. The author of the work “Historical surroundings of the city of Tobolsk” [2] .
