ATR Leasing VI was founded in 2003 as a subsidiary of the Dutch holding Exel Aviation Group (EAG) and began operating in January of the following year. The company operated Boeing 767-300 aircraft of the bankrupt airline Air Holland .

HollandExel primarily operated charter flights on behalf of and on behalf of travel agencies TUI and Thomas Cook . In 2004, BelgiumExel and Dutch Antilles , newly formed by the EAG holding company, entered the international airline market, with the former operating on long-haul flights from Belgium under a contract with Thomas Cook, while the latter operated regular flights from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport to European countries.

In 2005, the Exel Aviation Group was declared bankrupt. Despite this, Holland Exel was acquired by the tourist holding TUI , which after the acquisition of the airline changed its official name to Arkefly .
