Story

Antwerp , Belgium , 1938 . As a journalist, Tuls Luper collects materials for the UK on the escalation of Nazism in Europe . He is renting with his friend, literary critic Martino Nocavelli, an apartment in which a huge amount of papers and early films of Luper are stored. On August 23, Luper , who bought newspapers at the station kiosk, was arrested by members of the National Socialist Party [note 1] and transferred to the hands of Eric van Hoyten, leader of the party's Antwerp branch. Van Hoyten takes Luper into the bathroom at the Central Station , of which he is the boss. Van Hoyten is looking for ways to discredit Luper. He instructs his niece, typist Sissy Kolpits, to translate Luper's "English scribbles" into a readable form.

After some time, van Hoyten detained for violating the rules of conduct of the Belgian, similar to Luper. At the same time, the Antwerp family was arriving in Antwerp, who had already joined the ranks of the Nazis. Luper is torn between the interests of the Hawkmeisters, van Hoyten and his people.

Jan Palmerion, a train station dentist and assistant to van Hoyten, flirts with Paschun Hokmeister. He later patrols the streets of Antwerp with Percy Hockmeister. Percy promises Palmerion to introduce him to his wife after duty. Arriving in his room, he annoyedly discovers that Paige and Palmerion are already familiar. Jealous Percy starts up even more when he hears from his wife that Luper is in the same hotel. He finds Luper in the bathroom bound and brutally beats him. Van Hoyten appears and scolds Percy over the walls stained with Luper blood. Percy starts a fight with van Hoyten and loses a tooth in it. The fight is stopped by the time of Lefrenic.

Palmerion and van Hoyten decide to "remove" the aggressive Percy. Under the pretext of treating a knocked out tooth, Palmerion euthanizes Percy, circumcises him and burns the star of David on his forehead to imitate anti-Semitic killing. In the afternoon, Percy's body is found on the railroad tracks.

Meanwhile, Martino arranges for Luper’s escape plan, but at the agreed time, Luper catches Pawn and, under the threat of exposure, forces him to spend the night with her.

Luper falls in love with a female voice reading out the time of arrival and departure of trains from the station. One evening, the same voice, instead of a real schedule, reads out a fictional one, with real and imagined cities. Luper decides to find out who owns the voice. Putting on a suit made from train schedules and grabbing the key secretly handed to him by Martino, Luper walks up to the control room along the office premises and ventilation ducts. Van Hoyten arrives there, enraged by a flagrant violation of the station order. The voice belongs to Sissy Kolpits. Van Hoyten yells at her, accuses her of escapism and smashes her niece's face in blood. When van Hoyten leaves, Luper enters the control room and gets acquainted with Sissy. We learn that by reprinting the manuscripts of Luper, she fell in love with their author. We see their first kiss, accompanied by music from the film by A. Rene “ Last year in Marienbad ” [note 2] .

The Nazis take propaganda photos with Luper dressed in their uniform. Attempts to escape are unsuccessful. Gradually, Luper becomes at the disposal of Lephrenic, whose influence is increasing. Lefrenic makes a deal with Luper's jailers to transport Luper to France . The double of Luper, detained by van Hoyten, who had been kept at the station all this time, was killed, and the newspapers were informed of the suicide of the English journalist. Invited reporters photograph the dead body of a double lying in Luper’s bathroom. Luper himself is taken out of the room and led to the platform. On the way Luper accidental passengers recognize and come up to him asking for an autograph. May 11, 1940 , on the day of the bombing of Antwerp, during the general evacuation, Luper was taken away by train to Ghent .

The voices of Sissy Kolpitz spread across the space of the empty station, reading out a fictitious schedule with the terminal station of Vaux-le-Viscount .
