Lurie, Alexander Yudimovich

Alexander Yudimovich (Yudinovich) [1] Lurie ( September 30, 1897 - May 21, 1958 ) - Soviet obstetrician-gynecologist, professor (1932). Corresponding Member of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR (1939), laureate of the Stalin Prize (1941) [2] .

Biography

Born September 30, 1897 in the town of Klimovichi, Mogilev province, in the family of pharmacist Yudim Afanasevich (Yudka Hononovich) Lurie [3] . In 1921 he graduated from the medical faculty of Moscow University. In 1930-1938, he worked as the supervisor of the Ural Institute for the Protection of Motherhood and Childhood; in addition, in 1933-1938 he was the first head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Sverdlovsk Medical Institute [4] . After that he moved to Kiev , from 1938 and until the end of his life he headed the department of obstetrics and gynecology of the Kiev Medical Institute . In 1949 he was appointed chief obstetrician-gynecologist of the Ministry of Health of the Ukrainian SSR . He died in May 21, 1958, was buried at the Lukyanovsky cemetery in Kiev [5] .

Scientific activity

He dealt with problems of maternal mortality, labor pain relief, prevention and treatment of cancer of the female genital organs, and the organization of obstetric care. In 1930, he released the first original methodological manual on the work of women's clinics . On the initiative of Lurie from the second half of the 1930s in the USSR, during the process of childbirth, anesthesia began to be widely used [6] . In addition, on his initiative, mass preventive gynecological examinations were introduced throughout the country. He also analyzed the causes of maternal mortality and stillbirth and developed a chordotomy technique for advanced cases of uterine cancer. The author of over 100 scientific papers, including 5 monographs [2] .

Rewards

  • Corresponding Member of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR (1939).
  • Laureate of the Stalin Prize of the USSR of the first degree (1941) "for well-known scientific work on the anesthesia of childbirth, introduced into the practice of obstetric institutions in 1937, 1938 and 1939" [1] .
  • Honored Worker of Science of the Ukrainian SSR (1958).

He was awarded two Orders of Lenin , orders of the Red Banner of Labor , World War II degree and medals.

The name A. Yu. Lurie was assigned to the obstetric and gynecological clinic of the Kiev Medical Institute.
