Biography
Mainly engaged in portraits, wrote in Edinburgh and Dublin . Robert Barker first came up with the idea to depict a part of the city in the form of a circle. Thus, he laid the foundation for the creation of large picturesque panoramic paintings with a circular view.
The word panorama itself was also originally coined by the artist R. Barker to describe his panoramic paintings of Edinburgh. Attached to the cylindrical inner surface, the paintings were exhibited in London in 1792 as a “Panorama”.
In 1793, Barker transferred his panorama to the world's first specially built building for Leicester Square in London, and made a fortune at it.
He died in London and was buried in Lambeth .
His youngest son, Henry Aston Barker (1774-1856) continued his father's work and became a panoramic artist.
