Musical Performances

Pak took part in almost all musical numbers performed by the choir, and also sang several solo compositions, which were included in the series soundtrack albums and were released as singles through digital distribution . Usually, Pak accompanies himself on an acoustic guitar, for example, in the songs “Sweet Caroline”, “Only the Good Die Young”, “ Fat Bottomed Girls ”, as well as the song supposedly composed by Pak himself, “Big Ass Heart”. Pak's first solo song was a cover version of Neil Diamond 's Sweet Caroline, which he performed in the episode Mash-Up . Neil Diamond initially denied the creators of the series the use of his song, but later agreed when he learned the details of the plot and even appreciated the performance of Pak [3] [4] . “Sweet Caroline” became Puckerman’s most famous song on the show. Raymond Flanders of The Wall Street Journal called the version of Sulling “soulful” [5] , and Michael Slezak of Entertainment Weekly called it “more than Pak’s successful work.” [6] The song was released as a single, available for digital download, entered the album, as well as 34 lines on the Billboard Hot 100 , 22 on the Canadian Hot 100 and 37 on the Australian chart. [7] .

Reviews

The character received mostly positive reviews. Flanders appreciated Sulling’s play in the episode “Mash-Up,” where, in his opinion, Park finally emerged from the image of “dumb punk” and surprised everyone with his “cool and soft” voice during the performance of “Sweet Caroline” [5] . In his review of the next episode, “ Wheels, ” Tod VanDerWerff of The AV Club is in praised the further development by the creators of the Pak storyline, which, despite the abundance of romantic relationships with women, shows serious feelings for Quinn Fabre ( Dianna Agron ), which in turn has become a serious pivot for the further construction of the character's image [8] .

Mark Salling himself spoke of his character as one of the series’s most ambitious heroes [9] ; at the beginning, he is presented as a “big child” who is trying to break out of a small town by all means and maintain the status of a local favorite of women, but despite this he enters the choir [10] . Prior to filming, Salling gained more than 9 kg of body weight in order to more realistically embody the image of a football player, but by the third episode he was forced to lose 14 kg to be in good shape during the training scene; the actor described the experience as “extreme” [1] .

In 2010, Sulling was nominated for the Teen Choice Award in the Choice TV: Breakthrough of the Year (Actor) nomination with his colleague Kevin McHale ( Artie Abrams ), but none of them received an award [11] . In 2011, he was nominated for the Teen Choice Award in the category “Choice TV: Best Male Episode” along with his colleague Chris Kolfer ( Kurt Hummel ), but did not win [12] .
