Jesuit missions on the lands of the Guarani Indians are part of an extensive network of reduction missions created by the Jesuits in the 17-18 centuries in the territory of modern Argentina , Brazil and Paraguay with the aim of converting the Guarani Indians to Catholicism . Jesuit reductions were built by the Order of the Jesuits in areas inhabited by the Tupi Guarani tribes, mainly in the territory of modern Paraguay , then spread wider to parts of the territories of present-day Argentina , Brazil , Bolivia and Uruguay ; these lands have been regarded by the Jesuits since 1607 as the “Paraguayan Province”, in addition to the Mexican and Peruvian “provinces” of the Order [1] .
In addition to the five missions listed on the World Heritage List under the general name “Jesuit Missions of the Guarani Region”, this list also includes other missions of the Jesuit province of Paraguay:
- Jesuit Quarter and Cordoba Missions in Argentina
- La Santisima Trinidad de Parana Mission and Jesus de Tavarangue Mission in Paraguay
