Chess career

She started playing chess at the age of 13, and two years later she won the Latvian Championship among girls, in which she won a total of 4 years in a row (1954 - 1957). Sarma Sedleniece also won the women's championships in Riga four times (1959, 1960, 1969, 1970). In 1968, it achieved its greatest success and, after an additional match, won the Latvian Women's Chess Championship. After that, she won the prize in the Latvian championships two more times - in 1971 she was second, and in 1972 she took third place. 1971 as part of the Daugava team took part in the USSR team championship in Rostov-on-Don . [1] Sarma Sedleniece was also the first champion of Latvia in the championship of correspondence (1969–1970). [2] She is known as a model of sports longevity. The last time Sarma Sedleniece participated in the finals of the Latvian Women's Chess Championship in 2003, and in 2011 she participated in the Alvis Vitolins memory tournament.
