The city, with an area of 399 km², is located at 500 m (1640 ft ) above sea level , has a population of 140,741 people ( 2001 ), with more than 200,000 people in the suburbs , which makes up 70% of the provincial population.

The city is located 1130 km (702 miles ) from Buenos Aires . The closest provincial capitals are La Rioja (153 km), San Miguel de Tucuman (230 km) and Santiago del Estero (209 km).
Many pilgrims come to San Fernando del Valle de Catamarca to visit the Church of the Virgin Valley, which houses the statue of Nuestra Señora del Valle (Virgin of the Valley).

History and Politics
The original settlement, called London ( Spanish: Londres ), was founded here by the Spanish colonists in 1558 ; as a permanent settlement, it was founded before 1683, by Fernando de Mendoza Mate de Luna . The catamarca comes from the Quechua language and means "fortress on a slope."
The city in 1882 had a population of 8,000 inhabitants and in 1888 acquired a railroad . The development of the city was very slow, and the region remained low even in the middle of the 20th century .
Climate

Economics
Agriculture is the main economic activity of San Fernando del Valle de Catamarca; even a small amount of rainfall is necessary for irrigation . Fruits and grapes are grown in a separate area near the city, and there is little wine production here. In another, local products include the production of canned goods and handmade ponchos .
Breeding of cotton and cattle is economically important and is also mined in the mines of Farallón Negro , Bajo de la Alumbrera and Capillitas , where gold , silver , copper and tin are mined .
