Organization History

In 1942, the Association had almost only the name. Journalists and critics gathered in public places (restaurants, cafes), where they held their discussions. In January 1943, the union began to raise its status: awards were established, mainly for films of national production, for the last year. It all started with two categories - Best Film and Best Foreign Film and seven medals (best director, actor, original and adapted script). The first ceremony was held at the Alvear Palace Hotel in the format of "dinner with dancing." The first awards were given to: director Lukas Demare for the film “The Gaucho War” ( Spanish: La Guerra Gaucha ), the musical film “Malambo”, “The Third Kiss” ( Spanish: El tercer beso , the best actress - Amelia Bense ), “The Children Grow” ( Spanish Los chicos crecen , the best actor - Arturo Garcia Boer) and “ How Green Was My Valley ” ( eng. How Green Was My Valley , USA is the best foreign film). Subsequently, the awards were presented almost annually, with more or less fanfare and, depending on the circumstances, with interruptions. Most of them fell on the period between 1976 and 1980, when the list of films or filmmakers almost coincided with the lists of works or authors banned by political censorship.

The organization was engaged in other activities: conducted educational activities since 1956, held thematic exhibitions of film critics of the country, worked to increase domestic production of films, organized lectures and courses for the interested public, sponsored (1-2 films per year) of high artistic projects values and, in particular, was directly involved in the creation of the International Film Festival in Mar del Plata .
