Biography
Born in Mendoza , his father Leopoldo Suarez, served as Minister of Public Works in the province of Mendoza . He graduated from the National University of La Plata , a lawyer by training, and subsequently received his doctorate in political science at the University of Cuyo .
In 1941, he joined the Civil Radical Union party , from 1948 to 1952 he was a deputy of the Legislative Assembly of the province of Mendoza, in 1958 he was elected to the lower house of the National Congress of Argentina . He ran for governor of the province of Mendoza in 1963, but was defeated by Democratic Party leader Francisco Gabrielli. After winning the presidency of 1963, the representative of the Civil Radical Union Arturo Umberto Ilia Suarez was appointed head of the national oil company YPF . After the military coup of 1966, Suarez was removed from the post of head of the YPF . For several years he was an adviser to the leader of the Civil Radical Union Party, Ricardo Balbin, but after the party’s defeat in the elections in 1973 over the next 10 years he did not take an active part in politics.
President-elect Raul Alfonsin in 1983 appointed Suarez as director of SEGBA , the state-owned electricity company that served Greater Buenos Aires . In 1985-1986, Suarez was ambassador to Mexico, and in 1986 he was appointed director of the SIDE secret service [1] . During the leadership of SIDE (1986-1989), Suarez made the SIDE budget open and managed to double its size [2] . The period of his leadership was marked by a series of scandals related to the participation of SIDE employees in the activities of the ultra-right organization Carapintadas , as well as the gathering of dirt on senators from opposition parties [2] .
After the resignation of President Alfonsin in 1989, Suarez was relieved of his post as director of SIDE, for some time he worked in the national committee of the Civil Radical Union party. His son, Facundo Suarez Lastra, was mayor of Buenos Aires from 1986 to 1989. [1] .
He died of cancer in Buenos Aires in 1998, at the age of 74 years [1] .
