The Great Barrier Reef Airport , formerly known as Hamilton Island Airport, is the main airport of the Whitsunday Archipelago. Located on Hamilton Island on land conquered from the ocean. The airport is developing rapidly due to the sharp increase in tourism in the region; it is the nineteenth largest airport in Australia. Currently used primarily by low-cost airlines Jetstar Airways and Virgin Australia .

The airport was badly damaged in September 2001 due to the bankruptcy of Ansett Australia, which operated a large number of routes from the airport to Cairns , Townsville , Brisbane , Gold Coast , Sydney , Melbourne and Adelaide .
In October 2002, when approaching the airport a light aircraft crashed, killing 6 people.
