History
The bank was established on January 25, 1879. On April 4, 1879, the first bank manager was appointed, and on May 23, 1879, the bank was officially opened. The first banking operation was carried out on June 6, 1879. At first, the bank functioned as a credit autonomous institution. In 1885, in accordance with the Law on the Bulgarian National Bank, the bank was vested with the issue right [1] - the bank was granted the exclusive right to issue banknotes exchanged for gold. Issue of banknotes started in the same year. In 1891, the bank received the right to issue banknotes exchanged for silver. In fact, this right was realized only in 1899. [2]
In 1952, the mint began work.
In 1998, the Printing House of the Bulgarian National Bank was opened, which prints Bulgarian banknotes. Previously, banknotes were printed in Russia, Germany, Great Britain, the USA, the USSR and the State Printing House in Sofia.
