The model of the solar system ( Eng. Orrery ) is a mechanical device that illustrates the relative position and movement of planets and their satellites in the solar system in a heliocentric model . The device, as a rule, has a clockwork with a sphere that represents the Sun , in the center, and with planets at the ends of the poles.
A simpler device is also known only for a visual demonstration of the annual motion of the Earth around the Sun and the daily rotation of the Earth around its axis - tellurium .
History
According to Cicero , the Greek philosopher Posidonius built a system, possibly similar or identical to the Antikythera mechanism , which showed the daily movement of the Sun, Moon and five famous planets.
The first modern mechanism was produced in 1704 and presented to Count Orrey [1] .
Joseph Wright's painting “A Philosopher Explaining the Model of the Solar System in which the Lamp Replaces the Sun” shows a group of three people who are listening to a lecture on physics next to the model of the Solar System [2] .
