Arrowfish [1] ( lat. Nemateleotris magnifica ) is a species of tropical marine ray-finned fish from the goby family (Gobiidae) [2] .

Previously, the species was assigned to the family of Ptereleotra (Ptereleotridae) [3] , now reduced in rank to the subfamily [4] , later to the family of Microdesmidae [5]

DescriptionBody length up to 9 cm. The front part of the elongated body and the pennant-like first dorsal fin are white with pearl-blue specks, at the level of the beginning of unpaired fins the body and fins gradually acquire a bright fiery red color, the second dorsal and anal fins are long and narrow, with narrow longitudinal black stripes in the back half. Caudal fin with large black spots. The head is greenish with bluish shiny spots, eyes are large. In the anal fin 1 hard and 27-30 soft rays. In the dorsal fins there are only 7 hard and 28β32 soft rays.
Habitat and habitatThe range covers the tropical zone of the Indian and Pacific Oceans from East Africa to Hawaii , the Marquesas Islands , Pitcairn and Micronesia , north to the Ryukyu Archipelago, south to New Caledonia and the southern islands of Polynesia . It lives in the upper part of the outer slopes of coral reefs at a depth of 6 to 70 m, but usually no deeper than 28 m. It inhabits the bottom layers of water with a temperature of + 22 ... + 28 Β° C.
Lifestyle & NutritionFiery fish live in burrows and niches in coral reefs; several individuals, especially young ones, can coexist in one such hole. Hovering at a small height above the bottom, they catch zooplankton brought by the current: mainly copepods and other crustacean larvae. Monogamous .
CatchOne of the most popular species in marine aquarium , therefore it is often caught in nature and supplied to the international market. In places where overfishing and destruction of coral reefs is noted, the population of this species is declining.
