Biography
He was born on July 26, 1919 in the village of Alekseevka (now Nikopol District, Dnipropetrovsk Region ) in a peasant family. Ukrainian . Graduated from Zaporizhzhya Pedagogical Institute and flying club. He worked as a chemistry and biology teacher in Partizan High School of Primorsky district of Zaporizhzhya region .
In the Red Army since 1940. In 1942 he graduated from the Stalingrad Military Aviation School. Member of the CPSU (b) since 1943.
On the fronts of World War II from May 1942. Sergeant I.I. Babak was baptized as a pilot in the 45th Fighter Aviation Regiment of the 216th Combined Aviation Division (who were awarded the Guards titles for the differences in battles in the Kuban and were converted into the 100th Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment and into the 9th guards fighter air division, respectively), and in the summer of 1942, in the sky above Mozdok, he opened a combat account, shooting down the enemy Messerschmitt.
The commanding officer of the 100th Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment (9th Guards Fighter Air Division, 8th Air Army, Southern Front) of the Guard, Second Lieutenant I.I. Babak, distinguished himself in battles when breaking through the enemy’s defense on the Molochnaya River and liberating the city of Mariupol , so 6 September 1943 at the “Aerocobra” he markedly broke the train of the train, on which the Germans last tried to take the Mariupol girls to the Reich, in gratitude the Mariupol people raised funds for the Mariupol fighter, which was transferred to Babak. By September 1943, he personally shot down 18 enemy aircraft and 4 in the group.
By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of November 1, 1943, for the exemplary performance of combat missions of command and the courage and heroism shown in battles with the German invaders and guards, junior lieutenant Babak Ivan Ilyich was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union with the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal (No. 1132).
In total, the fighter pilot I.I. Babak during the war personally shot down 35 enemy aircraft and 5 in the group.
In February 1945, Senior Lieutenant I.I. Babak was appointed commander of the 16th Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment , previously commanded by A.I. Pokryshkin .
Less than two months before the end of the war, on March 16, 1945, when performing a combat mission, I.I. Babak was shot down by enemy anti-aircraft artillery fire and captured, from where he was released after the Victory. In memory of his friend, pilot of the regiment G.U. Dolnikov made inscriptions on the plane: on the right in place of the goddess of Victory - “For Petya Guchka”, on the left - “For Vanya Babak”.
April 14, 1945 division commander A.I. Pokryshkin introduced I.I. Babak to the title of twice Hero of the Soviet Union. But due to being held captive, the performance was not realized, and he was not even awarded the order after returning to the regiment on May 19, 1945.
Until 1947, he commanded the 32nd Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment . In 1947 he graduated from the Higher Officer Flight Tactical Courses. Since 1949, captain I.I. Babak - in stock, and then retired. He returned to pedagogical activity interrupted by the war, worked as a chemistry teacher and director of school No. 7 in the city of Poltava ( Ukraine ). He died on June 24, 2001.
