History
The Osterland region is located in the southern part of modern Finland , which has been under Swedish control since the 12th century. Since 1362, Osterland has been participating in the election of Swedish kings. In 1556, Johan III briefly created the duchy of Finland from the provinces of the Osterland region. Even then, the name Esterland fell into disuse. After the Russo-Swedish War (1808-1809), Finland became part of the Russian Empire .
