Berberyan, Martin Gabrielovich

Martin Gabrielovich Berberyan ( Armenian Մարտին Բերբերյան ; born May 22, 1980 , Yerevan , Armenian SSR ) is an Armenian freestyle wrestler , multiple champion of Armenia, European champion (2004), winner of the World Championship (2005). International Master of Sports of Armenia (1998).

Biography

Martin Berberyan began freestyle wrestling in 1987 under the leadership of Samvel Markaryan. In 1997, he became the silver medalist of the World Junior Championships, and in 1998 - the European champion in this age category. Since 1999, he was a member of the national team of Armenia. In 2004 he won the title of European champion. Since the 2004 European Championship was held in Ankara , and the competition was held on the day of the memory of the victims of the Armenian Genocide in Turkey , this success of Martin Berberyan received a wide public response in Armenia. Immediately after returning to Yerevan, the President of the NOC of Armenia Gagik Tsarukyan handed the car keys to the wrestler [1] .

In 2005 , moving into a heavier weight category, Martin Berberyan became the bronze medalist of the World Cup and then interrupted his performances for two years, which was due to his marriage and relocation to the USA [2] . In 2008, he returned to the carpet to take part in the Beijing Olympics . At one of the qualifying competitions, he managed to gain the right to participate in them, but the Olympic tournament itself was unsuccessful for him. After that, Martin Berberyan decided to end his sports career.

Since 2008, he has been working as the head wrestling coach at the Los Angeles sports club International Sports Union.
