Maddow, Rachel

Rachel Ann Maddow ( born Rachel Anne Maddow , MFA / ˈmædoʊ /; born April 1, 1973 , Castro Valley , California ) is an American television presenter and political commentator. [1] The author of the broadcast of The Rachel Maddow Show by the broadcast network Air America , as well as the eponymous nightly TV show on MSNBC. She was a guest host for Countdown with Keith Olbermann and Race for the White House . Maddow became the first open-minded lesbian host to firmly establish herself in prime time news releases [2] [3] [4] .

When asked about her political views, Rachel replied: “I am undoubtedly a liberal , and almost completely agree with the Republican Party policies of the Eisenhower era” [5] .

Biography

Maddow was born in Castro Valley, California . Her father, Robert Maddow, is a former US Air Force captain who resigned a year before her birth and later became a lawyer , and her mother Elaine Maddow (née Gosse) is a school curriculum administrator from Newfoundland , Canada [6] [7] [8] . Rachel's father has Russian - Dutch roots, and his mother is Anglo - Irish [8] . She grew up in a Catholic family, in society as her mother later described her as “very conservative” [9] [10] .

She graduated from Castro Valley High School, and in 1994 - Stanford University with a degree in public policy [11] . She was awarded a John Gardner scholarship, as well as a Rhodes scholarship , according to which she enrolled in graduate school at Oxford University in 1995 . In 2001, she received a Ph.D. from Oxford [12] . Her dissertation is on HIV / AIDS and health care reform in British and American prisons. She became the first winner of the Rhodes scholarship, not hiding his homosexuality [13] [14] .

The first radio station Maddow worked as a presenter was WRNX (100.9 FM) in Holyoke , Massachusetts , after winning the contest to find new personalities for the broadcast [15] . She became the second presenter in the morning show The Dave in the Morning Show . Then she became the host of the Big Breakfast show on WRSI in Northampton , Massachusetts , where she worked for two years. In March 2004, she left the project and joined the new Air America station [12] . There she hosted the Unfiltered show with Chuck Dee (from the hip-hop group Public Enemy ) and Lizz Winstead (one of the creators of The Daily Show) until it was canceled in March 2005 . Two weeks after that, her two-hour broadcast of the Rachel Maddow Show began , and in March 2008 she received another hour for broadcasting (from 6 to 9 pm). In September 2008, the show again became a two-hour clock when Rachel became the host of the night show on MSNBC.

In January 2008, Maddow won the role of political analyst on MSNBC and was a regular participant in discussions on the Race for the White House with David Gregory and participated in the coverage of the presidential election [16] , and also often appears on the countdown Kate Albermann " [12] .

On January 21, 2010, Air America hosted the latest release of its Rachel Maddow Show , two weeks earlier the company owners filed for bankruptcy [17] .

Maddow lives in New York , Manhattan , with his common-law spouse from Massachusetts , artist Susan Mikula [18] . They met in 1999 , when Mikula hired Maddow to do garden work at home. Rachel wrote her dissertation at the time [18] . Despite the fact that the state of Massachusetts recognizes same-sex marriage , Maddow and Mikula did not enter it [10] .
