8 "/ 55 Mark 71 - a universal naval artillery installation developed in the USA and intended for the ships of the American Navy . The main purpose of the gun mount was fire support for amphibious landing operations. It was developed at the request of the US Marine Corps and was a fully automated weapon. Tactical and technical task for development the installation was issued in 1969 by the command of naval landing operations.The development of the system began in 1971. The installation was successfully tested on board the destroyer and the Hull of the Forrest Sherman type in 1975. The Mark 71 was supposed to be installed on Spryuance destroyers , promising CSGN missile cruisers , as well as on the Long Beach missile cruiser after its re-equipment on the Aegis multifunctional combat system.
