Russian Ice Hockey Championship 1996/1997

The Russian Ice Hockey Championship 1996/1997 was the first Russian championship after the dissolution of the International Hockey League, organized by the Russian Hockey League . The Yaroslavl Torpedo became the champion for the first time in its history, the Togliatti Lada took the second place, and the Ufa Salavat Yulaev took the third place.

Rules

The Russian Super League Championship was held from September 10, 1996 to April 24, 1997. 26 teams, divided by 13 according to the territorial principle into the Western and Eastern zones, held the first stage of the tournament - 2 games between each team in the zone. 3 weakest teams from each zone played in a transition tournament with 4 strongest Major League clubs for the right to play in the Super League next season - 4 games between each team. The 10 strongest teams from each zone in the second stage of the tournament identified 16 playoff participants - 2 games between each team. In the 1/8, 1/4, 1/2 finals and series for third place, the winner was the best in three games, and in the final - the best in five games.
