Located on the banks of the Taranai River.

Until 1945, it belonged to the Japanese governorate of Karafuto and was called Kamitarannai ( 上 多 蘭 内 ) . After the transfer of South Sakhalin to the USSR, the village received its modern name (the Verkhne-Kirillovskoye option was also proposed) [4] .
