Education and academic activities
Dante Caputo was born in Buenos Aires in a family of emigrants from the Italian region of Basilicata . He graduated from the University of Salvador in Buenos Aires in 1966 with a diploma in political science, then received a diploma from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Taft University . From 1968 to 1972, he held various positions in the Organization of American States , and in 1972 received a doctorate in sociology from the University of Paris. In 1973 he headed the Center for Public Administration and Management Studies at the Institute of Torcuato di Tella.
In 1976, he founded the Argentine Center for Social Research. In 1981-1983 he was engaged in publishing.
Political career
During the presidency of Raul Alfonsin (1983-1989), Caputo served as Minister of Foreign Affairs of Argentina. In 1988, he chaired the 43rd session of the United Nations General Assembly.
After leaving the post of Minister of Foreign Affairs, Caputo was elected a member of the Chamber of Deputies, where he was Deputy Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs.
In 1992, Caputo was appointed Special Envoy of the OAS and the UN in Haiti . In 1993, he became the representative of the UN Secretary General in Haiti.
As a member of the Civil Radical Union Party , Caputo participated in the creation of the Front of a Joint State ( FREPASO ) before the general election in 1995 . Later that year, he joined the center-left New Space Party (Nuevo Espacio). Since 1996, he was vice president of the FREPASO coalition from the New Space. In 1997, re-elected deputy. In 1998, he joined the People’s Socialist Party, remaining vice president of FREPASO until 2000 [1] . In 1999, he participated in the election of a candidate from FREPASO for election as mayor of Buenos Aires, but lost to Anibal Ibarra , who won the election in 2000 .
In 2000, he joined the government of Fernando de la Roi , becoming the Minister of Science, Technology and Production Innovation. He resigned in February 2001 .
From June 2001 to September 2004, he led the UNDP Regional Project for the Development of Democracy in Latin America.
