Artsu (Ortsu) Chermoev ( July 16, 1825 - September 27, 1895 ) - Chechen , participant in the Russian-Caucasian ( 1842 - 1864 ) and Russian-Turkish wars ( 1877 - 1878 ), participant in the suppression of the uprising in Chechnya in 1877 under the leadership of Alibek-Khadzhi Zandaksky, Uma-Hadji Duyev , Soltamurad Benoevsky and Suleiman Tsentaroevsky, Russian major general . Biography

Born July 16, 1825 . At the height of the Caucasian war he entered the service of the Russian army.

July 2, 1842 entered the Dagestan mounted police . He was a translator from the mountains at the headquarters of the Caucasian Army. From the very beginning of his service, he took part in campaigns in the North Caucasus and on January 5, 1846, received the rank of ensign for military distinctions. In 1849 he was awarded the Order of St. Anne of the 4th degree and on August 27 of the same year was promoted to second lieutenant . The following year he received the Order of St. 3rd degree Anna with swords and bow. A year later, on November 20, 1851 , he was granted a golden checker with the inscription "For courage . "

Continuing his service in the irregular cavalry of the Caucasian Army, Chermoev received the rank of lieutenant (in 1852, with seniority from September 15, 1851), staff captain (June 13, 1852) and captain (in 1854, with seniority from December 19, 1853 for military distinctions) years), as well as the Order of St. Vladimir of the 4th degree with a bow (in 1854). Then he was promoted to majors (August 26, 1856) and lieutenant colonels (in 1859, with seniority from August 17, 1859). In the campaign of 1852 he was wounded.

September 20, 1859 Artsu Chermoev was awarded the Order of St. 4th degree George :

 In the case of April 10, during the defeat of the large Osman party, he and several policemen were in the head of a cavalry column bursting into the gorge where the Dolce farm is located and the first rushed to the enemy’s gun, repelled from the battle in this case. 

Chermoev also took part in the final campaigns in the Western Caucasus and was awarded the Order of St. Anne of the 2nd degree with swords and the imperial crown. December 18, 1862 promoted to colonel .

 

On September 24, 1871, having received the rank of Major General , Chermoev was enlisted in the army cavalry without a post and on December 25, 1872 he was appointed to be a member of the troops of the Caucasian Military District .

During the Russian-Turkish war of 1877-1878, Chermoev was in the ranks of the army operating in the Caucasus and brilliantly showed himself on June 13, 1877 in the battle of Zivin and vanguard affairs in August. On August 8, before dawn, with hunters of cavalry units and Chechen police and the support of the Nizhny Novgorod dragoons , he attacked the Turkish Pasha Subbotan outpost, killed up to 100 people, captured 27 prisoners, the head of the outposts Reshid Bey, 30 horses, a lot of weapons and returned back to Kuryuk -Dara.

Emperor Alexander II "in recognition of the excellent courage and order given by the major general, consisting of the army cavalry and the Caucasus army, Artsu Chermoev in simultaneous affairs with the Turks in 1877" on December 17 granted him the Order of St. Stanislav 1st degree with swords. The following year he received the Order of St. for distinctions in the campaign of 1878 . Anne 1st degree with swords.

At the end of the war, Chermoev continued to be part of the Caucasian Military District and died on September 27, 1895 (excluded from the lists on October 19).

From three wives he had 6 sons and 5 daughters.

The sons of Chermoev, among whom Abdul Majid stands out, until 1917 were one of the largest merchants in Russia, owned significant oil fields in Chechnya and Dagestan, and vast estates in different regions of the North Caucasus (including North Ossetia).

His eldest son Arsemik (1856) received the nickname " Baryatinsky " (in honor of the conqueror of Chechnya and Dagestan, Prince Baryatinsky ).

His other sons (Daniel Sultan, Arslahan, Abdul-Muslim, Aziz) were also military and left offspring.

From five daughters he had many grandchildren and granddaughters. When Tapa Chermoev emigrated to Paris, about 80 relatives lived in his mansion.

By a decree of the Governing Senate on December 23, 1899, all representatives of the clan of Major General Artsu Chermoev were recognized in the hereditary nobility of the Russian Empire and were recorded in the noble genealogy book of the Stavropol province.
