The head of a Catalan peasant is a series of paintings by Joan Miro , made between 1924 and 1925. All work is done with oil paints using colored pencils. Miro began work the same year that Andre Breton published his “Manifesto of Surrealism: Soluble Fish”. Part of the series was made in Paris . For Miro, “peasant” means his connection with rural knowledge, echoes the Catalan identity.
The Joan Miró Foundation has several preparatory drawings for this series.
The work shows the relationship of Miro with his homeland throughout his career. Joan Miro created this series in response to the ban on the Catalan language by Miguel Primo de Rivera . He was also influenced by the countryside of Bash Camp . In this series, he develops a language founded in works such as Catalan Landscape . According to one interpretation, the sequence of Miro's paintings is in the progressive simplification of the same scene. Christopher Green, in turn, says that this is not a completely linear trend towards simplification, but rather a dilemma, an internal discussion between the artist, who creates a filled pictorial space.
The paintings show a synthetic representation of the figure of a Catalan peasant with a repetition of symbols such as a triangular head, a beard and a red hat ( barretin ). The background of the paintings is neutral, yellow or blue.
