Family book

The genealogy book , or the Genealogy - originally an office paper, which was created by the Duma clerks . Genealogy books were used to compile references in local disputes [1] . The genealogical books contained generational paintings of noble families [2] . They are valuable documents for genealogical research.

The first manuscript genealogy books appeared in the 40s of the XVI century. Around 1555, by order of Ivan IV the Terrible , the " Tsar's Genealogist " was created. Initially, all the genealogies were created in the Treasury , then - the Rank Order [3] . After the abolition of localism in 1682, the Chamber of Genealogy was formed, the main purpose of which was the creation of genealogical books of the entire nobility. There, in 1687, on the basis of the “Sovereign Genealogist”, a Velvet Book was created, one of the lists of which in 1787 was published by N. I. Novikov under the title “Genealogy Book of Princes and Noblemen of Russian and Outbound” [4] .

After 1785, they began to compose genealogy books in the provinces. They included information about the provincial nobles. Information from these genealogy books was to be transferred to the Department of Heraldry [4] .

In addition to official pedigrees, there were so-called private pedigrees, also created in the Rank Order. Many of them were created by order of representatives of the nobility and contain genealogical murals that are absent in official genealogies. There are a large number of handwritten lists of private genealogies of varying degrees of conservation and detail [3] .

Since the middle of the XIX century, some authors began to create genealogical books of various Russian princely and noble families. These genealogy books were not in the nature of official documents, but were scientific research [4] . The most extensive in scope are the “ Russian Genealogy Book ” by P. V. Dolgorukov and the “ Russian Genealogy Book ” by A. B. Lobanov-Rostovsky .
