Creation History
Choreographer Alexei Ratmansky discovered the libretto of the ballet “ Lost Illusions ” by Vladimir Dmitriev, looking through the collection of “One Hundred Ballet Librettos” [2] “and immediately noted how dramatically well made they are and attractive to him personally” [3] .
For the first time in the post-Soviet history of the Bolshoi Theater , a new score was commissioned for staging the ballet - Leonid Desyatnikov became the composer, who had previously created the opera Rosenthal ’s Children by the order of the Bolshoi Theater. In the new work, Desyatnikov did not resort to literal quotes from composers of the time, but admitted that he “sees in his score a tribute to not only romantic ballet, but also French music of the 19th century. Although, at the same time, Russian literature fell into the score - verses by Fyodor Tyutchev written in French. By singing this text (in the original and in translation), the ballet music opens and ends ” [4] .
