History
The first mention of Weston dates back to 1009, when the king of England, Ethelred the Unreasonable, established the boundaries of the city [2] . In 1086, the Weston estate was granted by King William I the Conqueror of Hugo d'Avranche . In 1215, King John the Landless signed a charter stating that Weston does not belong to the surrounding counties.
In 1603, King James I granted Weston-on-Trent as an estate to Charles Paguet, conspirator and spy of the Roman Catholic Church, in 1633, Jacob I made the new owner of the village Anthony Roper. It is believed that it was during this period that the construction of the famous Weston Hall building began.
In 1642, at the start of the English Civil War , soldiers stationed at Weston Hall attacked the royalists camped on the south bank of the river.
In 1649, the Roper family sold Weston Hall, and it was never completed.
In September 1770, the construction of a river canal began, which was subsequently included in the lists of the cultural heritage of England.
In 1851, the population of Weston was about 400 people, about 70 yards. In 1873, a railroad was opened in Weston, several houses had to be blown up for its construction, and it ran right through the village, dividing it into northern and southern parts, inaccessible to each other.
In 1937, a water pipe was extended to Weston, which also made it possible to equip a centralized sewage system. The work cost 50 thousand pounds.
After the Second World War, one of the camps built near Weston-on-Trent during the war years became the home of a branch of the Ukrainian Youth Association in Great Britain [3] . The settlement is called Tarasivka .
In 1980, during the preparation of the Moscow Olympics , the Soviet side stated that Weston-on-Trent is a stronghold of international espionage, it was about the Ukrainian training camp of the CIA , preparing agents for sabotage of the Olympic Games. [four]
Culture and Education
The only educational institution in Weston-on-Trent is the elementary school of the Church of England , founded in 1821. The school is located in the west of the village, since 1830 it was located in two cottages, bought for two shillings from Sir Robert, the second baronet of Wilmot. In 1842, the school built its own building, accommodating up to 60 students. In 1890, the school had 35 students. The next move of the school to the new building took place in 2007, the grand opening took place on April 21.
There are several public organizations operating in the village: Brownies, Coffee Morning, Women's Team, and Scarecrow Trail. Their meetings are held in the village hall.
