Off Season
The 2004/05 season was completely missed because of the lockout, but by the beginning of the new season a collective agreement between the league, club owners and the players' union had not been signed. Under the new contract, it was proposed to introduce a salary ceiling, limiting the time for a player to receive free agent status. The salary ceiling was planned at $ 39 million, with a gradual increase in the following seasons. Such a restriction could hit big clubs like the Toronto, Detroit Red Wings , or the Philadelphia Flyers . The age of obtaining the status of an unlimited free agent was reduced to 27 years, and the term for obtaining such status was seven years, that is, if a player has been in favor of a club since the age of 18, then he can become an unrestricted free agent as early as 25 years [1] .
The changes also touched the rules of the game: now the goalkeeper could not touch the puck in the corners of the court; The size of goalkeeper guards decreased. The player who provoked a fight in the last 10 minutes of the game must be disqualified for one game. When you repeat the punishment doubled, and the coach at the same time received a penalty of $ 10,000 [2] .
Due to the introduction of a salary cap, Gary Roberts , Joe Newendijk and Alexander Mogilny left the team, gaining the status of unrestricted free agents [3] . Owen Nolan , who was injured throughout the lockout season, demanded that the team extend his contract for the new season 2005/06, but Toronto general manager John Ferguson Jr. said that Nolan was injured in a non-hockey game and therefore he becomes unlimited free agent [4] .
In the 2005 NHL draft, Toronto had the right to choose in five out of seven rounds. The choice of the Leafs in the second round was given to the New York Rangers in exchange for defender Brian Leach on March 3, 2004, and the choice in the fourth round to Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for striker Ron Francis on March 9, 2004 [5] . Both of these hockey players left the team at the beginning of the season - Leach moved to Boston , while Francis ended his playing career. Another choice in the seventh round was received as compensation for the transfer of free agent Tom Fitzgerald [5] .
Regular season
A total of 82 matches in the regular season, the team scored 90 points, which is 54.88% of the maximum possible. In 41 games, the team won, and 41 times lost (of which 8 times in overtime). The team's performance was 3.13 pucks per game (257 goals in total), and the team missed an average of 3.29 pucks (270 total).
