Biography

Very little is known about Ermenrik. In Anglo-Saxon historical sources, he is mentioned only as a representative of the ruling house of Kent . According to the testimony of the Venerable Bede , Ermenic was the son of Octa [1] . The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle adheres to the same version [2] . However, Nenny calls him the son of Esk [3] . Historians note that the name Ermenric probably has a Frankish origin [4] .

The exact date of accession to the throne Ermenrika unknown. The dates are called "about 512 years," if it is believed that he inherited Esku, or "about 522 years" and "about 540 years," if his predecessor is called Octu. The date of the death of Ermenrik is also unknown. Trouble The Venerable calls the beginning of the reign of King Etelbert I , the son and heir of Ermenric, 560, the date [1] . The same event, the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, dates back to 565, but gives erroneous information about the length of the rule of Etelbert [5] . However, the contemporary of the events, Frank Gregory of Tours , talking about the marriage of Princess Bertha to Etelbert, concluded probably in 589, [4] , reports that the throne of Kent at that time was still occupied by the father of her husband [6] . Based on this, historians attribute the death of Ermenric to a later time than the 560s. It is possible that he died in the year 591.

Ermenric, in addition to the son of Ethelbert I, also had a daughter, Rikul, wife of the King of Essex Sleddy [7] .
