Political career
His father, Dalton McGinty Sr., was a member of the provincial parliament from South Ottawa County until his death in 1990. In the same year, Dalton McGinty Jr. was elected to parliament from the same county. However, in general, these elections were unsuccessful for liberals - for the first time in history, the New Democratic Party came to power in the province. Dalton McGinty has become an opposition critic on energy, the environment, and universities. He was re-elected in 1995, when the liberals again became the official opposition, but this time to the conservative government. Since 1996, he has been the leader of the official opposition in the province, re-elected to this post in 1999. In his party, he was close in his views to the right wing oriented to business, and his critics to the left, oriented to recipients of social benefits.
By 2003, voters were tired of the conservative progressive government, which had entered into an open confrontation on many controversial issues. The liberals won the election and formed the government that McGinty led. He repeated his success in 2007. In 2011, the liberals won the election again, but won a minority in parliament (53 out of 107). McGinty again proposed to form a government.
