In the north, the highlands slope steeply to the Sichuan basin , in the southeast it borders on the Nanling mountains , in the west it gradually passes into the Yunnan highlands . The highlands are over 600 km long and up to 500 km wide. The average height is about 1000 m; some peripheral ridges rise above 2000 m.
The Guizhou Highlands are composed mainly of limestones , as well as sandstones and shales . The basins are filled with red-colored deposits. The development of limestone in combination with a monsoonal subtropical climate has led to the spread of various manifestations of karst . The surface of the highlands is deeply and fractionally divided by an erosion network.
In the valleys up to a height of 1000–1200 m, natural pine forests grow , as well as evergreen subtropical forests of castanopsis and bamboo . Above 1200 m, well-preserved oak and beech forests dominate on yellow-brown soils. In the intermontane basins involved in the cultivation of rice , corn , sweet potato . In the east of the highlands, subtropical crops ( tea , cotton , persimmon , lacquer and tung tree ) are cultivated in places.
