The song was written for the movie "Singing Hill", but was rejected by the publisher, who considered that blueberries do not grow in the hills. Stoke was sure that he collected it on the hills in the years of his youth. The song, however, is not about blueberries, but about a hill with that name, where the hero of the song found his love. Publishing Company Chappell & Co. eventually acquired a song, and on May 31, 1940 the song was recorded by the Sammy Kay Orchestra with Tommy Ryan's vocals. In the same year, five more recordings of the song, performed by various orchestras, were released. The most successful version was the Glen Miller Orchestra . In 1941, the song was performed by Gene Autry in the movie Singing Hill. Louis Armstrong recorded his version in 1949 and often performed it at concerts.
Fats Domino Version
It was Armstrong's version that inspired Fats Domino , in whose performance Blueberry Hill gained the greatest popularity in 1956. The song was recorded by him on June 26, 1956 in Los Angeles (while most of the Domino records of that time were usually held in New Orleans). The single “Blueberry Hill” with “Honey Chile” on the reverse side was released in September 1956 and took 1st place in the Billboard magazine charts. The single was sold in the amount of two million copies, becoming the fourth single “millionaire” Domino and, ultimately, the singer’s calling card.
