In 1921 - 1922, the Antonovsky District existed as part of the Volga German Labor Commune .
In 1922, by transforming the Antonovsky (Tonkoshurovsky) district, the Tonkoshurovsky canton was formed as part of the Volga German Labor Commune .
In 1927, the Tonkoshurovsky canton was renamed the Mariental canton . In the same year a part of the abolished Krasnoyarsk canton was added to the canton .
In 1934 a part of the abolished Pokrovsky canton was added to the Mariental canton.
In 1935, a part of the Mariental canton was transferred to the Lysanderge canton .
On September 7, 1941, as a result of the liquidation of the Volga Volga German Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, the Mariental canton was transferred to the Saratov region and transformed into the Sovetsky district .
