Description
The painting was made on a sheet of copper for a week between October 15 and 22, 1935. According to Miro, this was the result of an attempt to portray the tragedy and horrors of the Spanish Civil War . The painting was one of twelve works known as “Wild Paintings” [1] . Half of them were written in copper, and half on mesonite . They were created during the period of social unrest in Spain, which led to the civil war. Miro said this was a picture of a period of anxiety. The picture shows a man and a woman reaching for each other's arms, but not moving. Enlarged genitals and ominous colors have been described as “full of disgust and disgusting sexuality” [2] . The figures convey Miro's pessimism regarding the situation in Catalonia . Critics call this picture “key” from a series of works that present Miro’s forebodings about the upcoming civil war [1] . The black and white effect creates a black sky, against the background of which isolated figures are highlighted [3] .
Miro decided to name the picture in French, not in Spanish. According to Miro, the mention of excrement refers to Rembrandt , who said that when he began to paint, rubies and diamonds were in manure heaps [4] [5] .
Origin
