The Savannah River Site is a facility for storing, decontaminating and processing radioactive waste . Located in South Carolina , near the Savannah River, 40 km from the city of Augusta ( Georgia ). Built in the 50s of the XX century, initially as a plant for the development, enrichment and purification of radioactive materials for the production of nuclear weapons . At present, all reactors that have served for these purposes have been shut down, and some of them are used to store radioactive materials.
The Savannah River is managed by the US Department of Energy , but all work is done by a private contractor. The company covers an area of 800 km² and employs over 10,000 people.
