History of the BBB
In the course of the changes that took place on January 16, 1833 , the "Grand Directorial Lodge of the South of the Netherlands" was transformed into the Great East of Belgium. At the same time, the lodge received the patronage and protection of King Leopold I , who is believed to be a freemason himself [2] .
This obedience is currently the largest in Belgium. As of March 1, 2012, there were 110 lodges in the WWB (the so-called blue or symbolic lodges), which unite more than 10,125 brothers. Of the 110 lodges, 29 are in the north, 34 in Brussels , 45 in the south, and one in the state of Burundi in its capital, Bujumbura . Currently, there are no German lodges that would work under the auspices of the Great East of Belgium. The average age of brothers is 60 years, the average age of brothers when they come to the fraternity and are initiated is 44 years [3] .
The great east of Belgium is exclusively male obedience, and its lodges are dedicated only to men. The lodges, however, have the right to decide independently the issue of inviting women (sisters) as guests to their works [4] .
The overwhelming majority of lodges working in the WWB use the French charter . Some of the lodges operate according to the Ancient and accepted Scottish bylaws [5] .
In the Great East of Belgium, a division took place in 1959 , which led to the creation of the Belgian Grand Lodge (VLB), and which also split in 1979 , when 9 lodges leaving the VLB created the Belgium Grand Regular Lodge, the only obedience in Belgium that is recognized in the present, United Great Lodge of England [6] [1] .
Participation in international organizations
December 26, 1998 [7] , in Brussels, the Great East of France and the Great East of Belgium created SIMPA (International Secretariat of Masonic Adogmatic Obedience ( fr. Secrétariat international Maçonnique des Puissances Adogmatiques ), after they left the other Masonic organization - CLIPSAS [ 8] .
