Gold measures Akana

Gold measures Akana is a measuring system that existed among Akans in West Africa , used to weigh gold sand , which was used before the advent of paper and iron money. Weights were made of brass in the form of miniature household items, people, animals and plants; a person’s social status increased significantly if he possessed all the items to be weighed, as this allowed him to freely participate in trade [1] .

Collections of these items exist in several museums around the world, including the Museum and the Derby Art Gallery .
