History

The history of ASICS began in 1949 in post-war Japan . Kihatiro Onitsuka (鬼塚喜 八郎 ) thought about how he could help Japanese youth in such a difficult time for the country [2] . The decision came quickly, Mr. Onitsuka decided to create a sports brand for everyone in order to inspire his fellow citizens with the help of sports [2] . This is how Onitsuka Tiger was born.

At first, the company supplied goods only to the domestic market of Japan and China, and Nike founders Phil Knight and took advantage of this, buying sneakers and reselling them in the USA [3] . In 1977, after the expansion, Onitsuka Tiger was renamed ASICS - an abbreviation for "Anima sana in corpore sano", which in Latin means " A healthy mind in a healthy body ." A sports research institute was built in the city of Kobe to study and design running shoes.

Present Time

Today, ASICS takes 5th place in the world among the largest companies producing sportswear and shoes.

As of March 31, 2011, ASICS has more than 5,600 employees worldwide. [4] In recent years, the company has become the fastest growing sports shoe brand in Europe. The ASICS brand belongs to the top brands of sportswear and footwear manufacturers.
