Basic Information

At the insistence of Minister Uvarov , several poems were excluded from the poem. And in the second edition, despite the energetic protests of Pushkin, these places were not restored. The poem connects the original narrative in the spirit of the ancient Italian chronicles on the plot of Shakespeare's drama " Measure for Measure " with a fairly close translation of the scenes of this drama. Initially, Pushkin was going to translate the drama of Shakespeare the size of the original (white 5-stop iambic ), the translation began. The central idea (which occupied Pushkin in those years) is the superiority of the spirit of mercy over the letter of the law.

Criticism met the poem negatively, seeing in it signs of the fall of Pushkin's talent. On this occasion, Pushkin said to Nashchokin : "Our critics did not pay attention to this song and think that this is one of my weaker essays, whereas I didn’t write anything better."
