Context
His Majesty the King, together with Her Majesty the Queen and His Highness the prince make up a series of sculptures made in 1974, when Joan Miro experienced a moment of worldwide recognition. That year, a retrospective of his works was shown in the Grand Palace of Paris and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Paris, but these three works were exhibited for the first time.
Two years earlier, the Magnetic Fields exhibition was held at the Solomon Guggenheim Museum and Miro bronzes at the Hayward Gallery in London. This was also the year of the creation of the future Joan Miro Foundation in Barcelona, opened to the public on June 10, 1975. The situation of worldwide recognition was combined with the difficult situation in Spain, which was going through the last years of the dictatorship. In February of the same year, Miro wrote a triptych “The Hope of the Condemned, ” anxious about the execution of Salvador Puig Antica on a garrote on March 2, 1974. Miro created his work, criticizing authoritarianism, contrasting the bombast of figures with the simplicity of the materials used.
In 1979, after the death of Franco, Miro spoke about the civic responsibility of the artist during a response speech for obtaining an honorary degree from the University of Barcelona:
| In my understanding, an artist is one who, during the silence of others, uses his voice, and this is not something useless, it is good, service to people. Original Text (Eng.) It is not a matter of fact. Joan Miro, October 2, 1979 [2] |
