Biography
Born on January 30, 1720 in Finspong ( Sweden ). As a Swede, he grew up in Utrecht in a family with strong Dutch roots from the age of three, but later returned to Sweden. From his childless uncle, his complete namesake, Karl de Gera (1660-1730) inherited the estate and a large metallurgical plant, as well as the castle Leufsta ( Lövsta ) north of Stockholm .
A student of Karl Linnaeus , was a member of the Stockholm Academy of Sciences and a marshal of the marshal. He became interested in entomology very early and became an academician at the age of 19 when he was elected a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in 1739, and a corresponding member of the French Academy of Sciences in 1748.
He wrote “Mémoires pour servir à l'histoire des insectes” (in seven volumes, Stockholm , 1752-1778), where he described 1466 species of insects, accompanying them with 238 illustrated sheets (engravings). An extract from this work, Genera et species insectorum, was published by Retz in Leipzig in 1783.
He died on March 7, 1778 . He was buried with his wife in the Uppsala Cathedral . His insect collections have been bequeathed to the Academy of Sciences and are housed at the Swedish Museum of Natural History in Stockholm . He left his library in the castle in Leufsta , where among other valuable things were the works of the famous scientist and rector Olof Rudbeck the Elder (1630-1702) and a valuable collection of notes of the 18th century. The library at Leufsta was acquired by the Uppsala University Library in 1986 thanks to a donation from Katarina Crafoord (one of the daughters of industrialist Holger Crafoord , 1908-1982, founder of Gambro ).
He was married to Katarina Charlotte Ribbing .
