Overview
The concept of this “concert” record is rather unusual: entertainer speeches, applause and crowd noise were superimposed on the studio tracks, thus imitating concert albums. At the same time, the album included some of the songs that had not been previously released on Berry's records: “Surfin 'Steel”, “Rockin' On The Railroad (Let It Rock)”, “Still Got The Blues”, “I Just Want” to Make Love to You ”,“ All Aboard ”,“ Trick or Treat ”and“ The Man and The Donkey ”. Even more unusual is the fact that the title of the song “ Surfin 'USA ”, which was recorded by The Beach Boys in 1962, is presented on the cover. However, the album is actually the original version of “ Sweet Little Sixteen ”, the melody of which was entirely borrowed by the group for their song. Most likely, the success of The Beach Boys prompted Chuck Berry to rename “Sweet Little Sixteen” to “Surfin 'USA.” Chess Records did not have new Berry songs at that time, since Berry was imprisoned in February 1962, and accordingly, the responsibility for the release of the material lay with the producers of the record company. Perhaps in such a decision of the producers there was cruel irony: a concert album of a musician imprisoned.
Subsequently, the album was released with original versions of songs, without overlapping concert effects.
